August Adventures

In the third week of a very sunny July, something unexpected arrived: some of what I call, ‘Jeni Post.’ The brown envelope, the unmistakable flourished writing with a thick, black, probably italic, pen. I say it was unexpected, but that’s probably a little disingenuous: Jeni sends out writing prompts and whatnot most months, and has them ready for whichever writing groups she is (most usually) hosting whenever these occur. Jeni’s plan has been to prepare a bespoke set of writing prompts for each month of the current year, to be used time and time again. We have co-ordinated the plan with this very website, in refreshing and re-organising our popular Months of Daily Writing Prompts. Most months already had at least one set of their own. Months of daily writing prompts to sit alongside other activities and other prompts for writing: ‘Starting,’ ‘Making,’ and so on. And so, the plan relating to the website was to let Jeni’s prompts complement the prompts we already had online: many freely available, others locked in hidden or forgotten parts of this website, some stuck in our archive site waiting to see the light of day once again. Sets built up over the past 15+ years of the National Writing Project (UK).

Jeni, of course, has been here from the beginning. However I was still surprised and highly delighted when August’s Jeni Post arrived ahead of schedule and fresh as a daisy. Just last year, ‘August (1) - Alphabet’ found its way here and into our lives, and so ‘August (2) - August Adventures’ not only extends Jeni’s run through this year but means that for every month of the calendar year so far, we now have at least two sets of monthly, daily writing prompts for you. It’s quite fitting, therefore, that once again these appear calendar-style, although this month there is a sometimes-repeated twist: the days have no numbers. There is a natural flow, if you choose to follow the path that we know some of you rely on so much. You do not have to follow that path (and even when months are divided into numbered days, we know some of you don’t follow them anyway! Not that you need to). This month, Jeni directs us all to follow our own path. So whether you’re travelling far and wide this summer or staying closer to home, use these prompts as you like. Adapt them at your will, skip, revisit, join together… you get the picture. Now; enjoy the flow of wherever the path shall lead.
